Step 8: Select Save App to create your exhibit
STEP 9: Create a Collection
A) What is a Collection
A collection is a folder that can hold stories in your platform. Within Collections, you can create additional subfolders called Sub-collections to organize your stories.
For example, the Chattanooga Public Library has created a Collection to organize their War stories.
Within the War Collection, they have created Sub-collections to organize stories by the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Spanish-American War, and so forth.
Collections are a great way to organize all of your content and to make it simple and easy for your visitors to navigate your exhibit. Fun fact, you can place one story in multiple Collections and Sub-collections which makes it easier to populate your exhibit with great content.
B) Create a Collection
Within this template, you can create as many Collections and Sub-collections as you like. We recommend creating Collections before you start adding Stories because it makes it easier to organize your platform.
STEP 10: Create Your First Story and add it to a Collection
FAQ: What is a story?
Within Pass It Down, you can create multi-media stories for your exhibits. A story can contain video, audio, text, photo, or pdfs in any combination as well as up to 60+ other types of Meta-Data Information.
To start, select the + Story Button which will take you to the Story Editor.
A) Give your Story a Title
B) Upload video, audio, text, photos, or pdfs. You can create a full multi-media story. Drag the content into any order you choose. *Fun tip, whatever the first image is will be chosen as the featured image for your story.
For most media types, you will be asked to enter a Caption (optional.)
C) Choose how your Media will be displayed (Gallery or Stacked)
Pass It Down gives you two options for how Media within a story will be displayed, Gallery or Stacked.
For example, let's say you upload 5 photos in a story about Michael Jordan. Gallery, like Instagram, will place all 5 photos at the top and you will have to swipe through the photos to view all 5. Stacked, on the other hand, is like a traditional website. Your users will view the photos and other media in whatever order they are placed on the page.
D) Add a description to your Story
Next, add a description to what your Story is about. The Description will appear at the top of the page right next to the Title.
For example, we have created a story titled James Naismith and have given it the description, The Founder of Basketball.
E) Add a Date to your Story (Optional)
Within each story, you can add the Date that the story occurred. Pass It Down uses the Date of stories to allow your users to sort content chronologically and to search and filter content by date.
F) Enter the Location of your Story by a Name Search or by Coordinates
G) Add Tags to your Story. Every tag you add is Searchable and will create connections between tags on other stories.
H) Add your Story to a relevant Collection and/or Sub-collection
I) Add Meta-Data (Optional). The Pass It Down platform uses the Dublin Core Schema.
Within this template, Pass It Down allows you to organize your exhibit with our Meta-Data structure. By default, we have the Dublin Core Schema active.
J) Choose whether to Feature the Story
Within this template, you have the ability to Feature stories in the landing page for the exhibit. For example, if it was December 1st, we would feature the James Naismith story because that's the day he founded basketball. You can choose to Feature as many stories as you like.
K) Once your story is ready to go, change the status from Draft to Published
L) Finally select Save Story and wait for all of your content to Upload (the more content you have, the longer you will need to wait.)
